Richard, Fantastical still allows you to set custom recurrences. I have not paid for their offerings and still have been able to do all the things I was able to do before they started charging. I have not seen any added value for me in paying for their higher-tear plan, and don't think I should have to pay to use a calendar anyway. In answer to the original question, I have tried the native iOS calendar, Google Calendar and Fantastical II, and eventually find myself going back to Fantastical. I like and have gotten used to the app layout, with the month view on top and my list of appointments at the bottom of the screen. I have to use Google Calendar for work, but did try it as my primary calendar. I like things about Google Calendar and the native calendar, but seem to find things I don't like or prefer about each. Try out a calendar and se which one you like best. You may prefer the native calendar for your use case. If there was a way I could have a list of appointments for a given day along with the month displayed in the native calendar, I would probably go back to that since it has improved. But I don't like the number of double taps into a day and then back out of the day's list to get back to the month view.
