Subject: FW: Voice Dream Scanner scanning a book
Greetings,
I have a book that was gifted to me by the author after we had served together
for several years on the Oregon State Library Board. When I got to the end of
my term, he gave me a signed copy of his book, “Oregon Disasters” by William L.
Sullivan, an Oregon travel writer.
It had been on my shelf for almost 10 years. I couldn’t find it in an
accessible format, so decided on scanning it myself after having it spiral
bound.
I did some tests with a few approaches; Openbook on a flatbed scanner, Voice
Dream Scanner, SuperSense, and KNFB Reader on my iPhone.
I decided for sake of speed and accuracy, Voice Dream Scanner would be my
choice.
I have a iPhone 13 Pro with 256 GB of storage.
I have an old FOPYDO scanning stand that I used since I had the book spiral
bound and wouldn’t need to deal with trying to get both facing pages at once.
I set Voice Dream Scanner to batch mode and turned off the auto capture. Using
my Orbit Reader 20 Plus, I put the focus on the Capture Image button,
positioned the phone on the stand and put the book on the bed of the stand,
with a single page facing up.
I hit the select button on the Orbit Reader and captured the first page.
Turned the book over, and did the second page. Flipped to the third page and
repeated.
After 232 pages, I was kicked out of the app.
Fortunately, the pages were still in the app, so I saved them to Voice Dream
Reader, cleared the Scanner app, and scanned the last 40 or 50 pages.
Saved that last part to Voice Dream Reader.
The scanning results are quite excellent.
I then exported the text from VDR and emailed the two batches to myself, opened
then in Microsoft Word, and combined them into one file.
In the beginning of the book are a lot of maps with words at odd angles and
scattered which no scanning tool, even Openbook, could make sense of. I
noticed some hyphenated words that split between two lines like the word
fictional that would be rendered fic-
tional.
Assuming there will be a fair number of hyphenated words and a few other map
pages, Word’s spell checker gave it an 89% score.
That is damn good in my book.
Once I started listening to the book with Voice Dream Reader, and got beyond
the Introduction where there was a map or two, I listened to about 34 pages of
content that had almost no errors. I heard maybe two over 34 pages.
I will finish the 250 page book over the next couple of weeks and give an
update as to how accurate it was; but I am pretty confident that the accuracy
when on text without funny maps will be plus 98%.
For those who do not know about spiral binding a book; I learned of having this
done about 43 years ago.
I used an OPTACON quite a bit in those single days, and had a nice Webster’s
Collegiant Dictionary that I could look words up in, but it was about 2.5
inches thick and a pain to force open in the middle.
So, I called around and found a printer who would remove the hard back binding,
and spiral bind it into 4 volumes.
It wasbrilliant!
Fast forward to the current day and my sighted wife, who plays piano some, has
been buying books of piano music and having them spiral bound so they would lie
flat on the piano.
Any store that does photo copying probably has the ability to do spiral
binding, like the UPS stores or FedEx stores. We use a UPS store near us.
I had her take this book to get it spiral bound. It cost about $4.50.
They leave the front and back cover, so you only lose the spine of the book.
Well worth it to make scanning that much easier.
You may wonder why I didn’t take advantage of the column recognition feature in
Voice Dream Scanner; well, I don’t have a good set up to do that with the width
I would need, and this proved in the end I think to be faster.
Later,
Richard
