You probably could get a better explanation of the Today screen on Apple's site; but I think of it as a place to store widgets you don't want taking up home screen space. Once you are on the Today screen, a 4 finger tap at the bottom should put you on an edit button. If it doesn't, try flicking right until you land on an actual edit button. Double tap. Then, do the 4 finger tap at the bottom again, and you should find a Customize button, double tap. Now you should be on a screen where you will flick to the right through any existing widgets, then get into a list of Widgets you can add. HTH,
