If you bought Apple Care, you should be able to get the battery replaced. Even without Apple care, a new battery shouldn't be more than about $70. Far less than a new phone. Also, make sure screen brightness is set to auto under accessibility, Display and text size, and once auto Brightness is on, use the screen curtain when no one needs to look at the screen.
