I think I know what you've run into here. For the buttons on the headphones to adjust the volume, there needs to be sound playing. That can certainly be your iPhone speaking. If those buttons are used when no sound is playing, they'll trigger the battery status check. Simply cause your iPhone to play music or other audio with a two finger double tap, or just touch the screen to cause VoiceOver to speak. While it's theoretically saying something too quietly to hear, press the top button on the right of the headset to raise the volume.
