Apple has a way of thinking about merged contacts. Especially if you are using both Google and iCloud for contact services. Near the bottom of the card (possibly only when in edit mode) there should be a merged and duplicate contacts information. Contact management is easier in Google contact on the web or on the Macintosh. There are also several third party applications that are supposed to give better interfaces for managing contacts.
