The alternative would of course be to record a video using the regular camera app and to then share it to Whatsapp.

Just had a look and it would seem you simply tap the camera button which is just next to the button you tap to record a voice message, then you can select between photo and video, Voiceover calls it "Camera mode video" and "camera mode photo". There is also a camera chooser toggle button which by default is set to the backfacing camera, double tap it and it will change to front facing, but Voiceover does not announce it unless you swipe off the button and back to it. What is a bit tricky is to find the take picture or record video button, but there is an unlabelled button which just says "button" just above the camera mode butons which in turn are near the bottom and I assume it will be the take picture/start recording button.
