Please let us know if you do find a solution, since I have experienced it as well in the Mail app. I have a Bluetooth keyboard but often forget to use it with my phone, even if it could improve things. So I'm using gestures on the phone. It is an annoying bug/issue, but not a huge deal, unless it drops me in the middle of an 18 message thread. It is really inconvenient at that point, but I typically don't open threads with more than 9 messages unless I really want to read those messages. For the record, I'm using iOS 16.6 on an iPhone 13 Pro.
