For me, there are no odd characters spoken, but it also does not say "read" but if unread it speaks unread. Not sure if you are all experienceing this as well but try flicking dow on an unread message just for fun, and when it says mark as read, double tap and take note of how it sounds. It doesn't matter what voice you use by the way I've used to them all in this test and can confirm it sounds very strange to hear, irdst at least this is the closest I could come to creating how it sounded to me, but anyway, just thought I'd let you know.
