Is this related to BARD? If not then I still hear a tone when I hold down the 
side button. It's no louder than it was in IOS 16 though.

Since I wrote that last message, I discovered yet another problem:

I hear absolutely nothing when I hold in the Side button. Not a very quiet 
tone, nothing at all. I turned the phone up and held it up to my ear when I 
held in the Side button and it doesn't play anything. I still hear the 
traditional tone when I let go of the Side button, but nothing when I press and 
hold it.
