I just got my 15 Pro delivered to me yesterday after ordering it at my carrier’s store Tuesday. It’s 256 gb, and I am moving up from an 8 Pluse myself.I too notice the battery drain and note the non-support of iOS 17. Those were key decisions for me as well. 
In addition, I would like to try out some of the new toys like LIDAR. 
Thankfully my carrier got me into a senior plan as I am 55+, so the cost works out to almost break even.  
I ahven’t had a chance to set the new phone up yet, but will probably go do that tomorrow, so I can’t speak to performance.  
A couple things we will both have to get accustomed to are not having a home button or touch ID, the new actions button, and probably different placement of buttons overall. We’ll have to set up Face ID, and I remember one thing that came up soon after this came out is that we will need to turn attention off. 
I got a holster case, screen protector, and charging brick as accessories.  
This is a consierable jump,and I am aheaad of one of my local blindness tech gurus, Ryan, who occasionally posts here, in getting this phone.

Please give me your opinions.  Right now my phone works. OK, other than I have to charge it a couple times a day so that was the reason I chose to upgrade, and since iOS 17 is not supported on the eight.  I also hope the new phone will work with my focus fifth Jen Braille Display.
