the impression I get is that she is having problems only with her phone
connecting to her wi-fi. I wonder if she has the same problem with anyone elses
wi-fi.

Subject: RE: Cellular VS Wi-Fi On Phone Question Please.

Do you have any other devices like a computer, Apple TV or even an Amazon Echo
or google Smart speaker?
Anything which connects to the internet from a desktop computer which is
plugged into your router to a smart light switch or bulb, a thermostat or any
of the many smart devices which are now available require an internet
connection via a modem/router whether that is through ADSL, cable or fiber or
even through a smart hub which itself again uses the cellular network to
connect.
You could enable the personal hotspot on your iPhone and certain devices can
connect to that, but that would only work if you are at home and even then some
things may not work; not sure if you could connect an Amazon Echo to the
hotspot on your iPhone and whether this would be a good experience, e.g. would
it connect quickly as soon as you walk into the house after you were away etc.
If all you have is an iPhone and you never use the internet or a connection to
the internet from any other device then by all means, you could maybe forget
about havving another internet connectiojn through a traditional ISP.
Remember that when you use the term "Wi-Fi" this refers to your internet
connection, the "Wi-Fi" is simply the wireless network your ISP's modem/router
creates or maybe the network your own router creates if you have your own
router.
If your iPhone doesn't stay connected to your Wi-Fi network there are really
only two possibilities:
1. Something is wrong with the actual phone where the Wi-Fi modem or antenna is
defective
2. You don't have good Wi-Fi coverage in your house or maybe it's as simple as
restarting your modem or router.
The actions I would take would be as follows in this order:
1. I would make sure you understand if you have a router which is your own or
if all you have is the equipment your ISP gave you. Then I would check how I
could reset/restart the modem/router. If it is from your ISP it is likely the
modem is also the router which most likely has at least 2 but more likely 4
ethernet ports where you can plug in a desktop computer or other network device
like a network attached hard drive and so on with a cable. It also generates
the Wi-Fi network and often ISP's use not very good equipment. There is a
reason why a good mesh router which is the best solution if you have a somewhat
larger house cost hundreds of Dollars. In any case, restarting the ISP's
modem/router or your own router would always be my first step. Of course making
sure the firmware of whatever networking equipment you have is updated is also
important, but it could be a more difficult task if you are completely
unfamiliar with how these devices work, how you can log in and all that.
2. Second step would be to do a Reset Network Settings on your iPhone. This
never hurts and often does only good. Yes, there is the small inconvenience
which Mike already pointed out that after your iPhone reboots, you have to
manually to to Settings > Wi-Fi, tap on your Wi-Fi network and re-enter the
password. If you called your iPhone something like "Janet's iPhone", you would
also have to go to Settings > General > About and at the very top where the
name is now simply "iPhone" double tap on that and put whatever you want to
call it in there. But that is it and you may find a reset network settings may
clear up the issue and it may even have other positive effects like maybe a
little battery saving etc. I would make sure that before doing this you bring
up the app switcher and close all apps.
But in a nutshell either poor Wi-Fi or a defective iPhone are the only reasons
why you would have issues after restarting your router and resetting network
settings.
I have had my Netgear Orby Mesh router at home for at least 6 years and while I
may reboot it a couple of times a year just for the fun of it, my wife's
iPhone, my iPhone, my laptop, our Google Home speakers, our Alexa speakers, all
our Sonos music speakers, Apple TV, our LG smart TV and all the other many home
automation devices we have are connected and nothing ever drops or doesn't
work. Same goes for my business where I have the business/Pro version of the
Netgear Orby.

Subject: Cellular VS Wi-Fi On Phone Question Please.

Hi Everyone,
I have another question regarding Wi-Fi vs cellular. What would the advantages
or the disadvantages of just using my cellular on my phone would be? I still
don’t know yet why my Wi-Fi connections keep losing the Wi-Fi connections
though. I just called my phone carrier T-Mobile, and the rep who I talked to
said why even bother with the Wi-Fi because I have an unlimited plan. So just
out of curiosity, I’m wondering. Apple recommend I reset my Network settings,
T-Mobile recommends not even bother with the Wi-Fi. I haven’t called my
internet provider ATT yet to ask about why suddenly my Wi-Fi connections are
not holding only on my phone. I haven’t yet downloaded the iOS 16.46.1 to
know about the download speed though.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Janet
