You can check the volume by saying wake word change volume to 3 or whatever you want the volume to be. However, it may be muted. There are four buttons on top. Of the 5th gen Dot. A plus and minus which are volume buttons. A round button which is both used for resetting and for waking up the Lady A. And opposite that is the mute button. That mute button makes a sound when mute goes on and off. It is higher pitched when mute goes off than when it is muted. Hope that helps. Merv
