If you want to use the Mail app I wouldn’t bother about the Gmail app although Christopher is correct, as long as you are not somehow using POP3 to get your Gmail which I am not even sure is possible with the iPhone, you can set up your account in both apps. When I tried the Outlook app for a while I had my Microsoft email accounts set up in both the Mail app and the Outlook app and since Mail is not downloaded in the traditional sense but “synced” to your phone, it doesn’t really matter. Just make sure you select the account type as “Gmail” when you set up your account in the iOS Mail app.
