I was wrong. A one finger double tap near the 2 o'clock position on the watc face get the hour and minute, most of the time. A one finger triple tap gets just the minute, again, most of the time.

However, I've noticed that with one of the WatchOS updates, double-tapping the screen doesn't work well. So, what I often do is tap the screen 3 times.
