Hi Wil and others, for reading audio books my solution is to use
Downcast. You can add files in various ways, including iTunes, or some
file sharing app like UBI disk or filer. I don't care for iTunes either
for audio books and most other things other than app syncing, but I can
easily use it to upload audio books to downcast directly. It's very good
about remembering the position of where you leave off and you can
control individual speed playback settings for each book or podcast you
are subscribed to.
Hope this helps.

Hi Shane,
The way Ubidisk works is much like the other flash disk apps out there, except
Ubidisk uses Easy Push, which integrates into the shell of Windows Explorer.
You can send folders via EasyPush and they show up in local files.
I have already addressed this with the developer, but there is currently no
way to mark your position in audio files. If this is implemented, I will
have found a solution to my audio book needs. I hate iTunes, and haven't
found an adequate solutions for an app that I can use to read and keep my place
within the file. I've spent a week looking for such an animal, and this is
the closest I have come to a solution.

Hi,
I read up on Ubi Disk. But could someone please explain exactly how it works
and what it does? If you download music on your pc can you download them to
your iPhone wirelessly? Again how does this app work?
Thanks.
