I think of that gesture more as a drag up rather than swipe up.

Touch the very bottom edge of the screen and drag your finger up to the second
tone or clear vibration, then lift.

If your face is in focus it should open, but if not, or if you have rebooted
your phone, you will have to enter the passcode.

Subject: Swiping Up to Unlock Phone

Some of you have been most helpful by answering my previous questions in a
manner that was both supportive and logical. So I am encouraged to acknowledge
what I do not understand and ask another question.

My question today refers to the gesture of swiping up when trying to unlock the
phone using face ID. When I pick up my locked phone and swipe down with two
fingers, I get the time plus the words, “locked, flashlight off button, camera
button.” Sometimes the words “swipe up to unlock” appear just after the word
“flashlight.” The only thing I can do is a three-finger single tap, which
takes me back to the home screen. Then I have to type my password.

What am I doing wrong? It seems that I have tried swiping up with every
permutation available to the human hand!!
