As long as both the headphones and adapter are functioning correctly sound should come from both sides. Mak esure that the 3.5 mm male jack of the headphones is plugged in all the way, sometimes it take a little extra force and you may actually hear it click. Apart from that my question is that if you want a wired headset, why not just buy a set of Apple Earpods with Lightning connector so you can plug them straight into your iPhone? In the US they cost $19 and for that price they are actually a really good headset.
