Yes, I strongly urge you to do an iCloud backup. To do that, go to settings>iCloud, and look for te storage and backup heading.

I had stopped using iTunes on the old computer as I didn't need it. I assume they can transfer my contacts to a new iPhone, but not my apps. Is that correct?
