Since I contributed to this discussion early on, I’ll make a few more comments
now.

I do agree that the Walmart app is usable, but I also believe that it has taken
a step or two back as far as accessibility goes, or at least that seems to be
what has happened, and that is what is causing all the discussion/problems now.

Here’s the first thing to try, and while it’s an inconvenience, it can be
worked around. Open the Walmart app, make sure you only have items in your cart
that are saved for later, and then double tap the button in the top right that
says something like your cart is empty. Expected behavior is to bring up the
list of those saved for later items and let one swipe through them, but you are
kicked completely out of the app instead.

Here’s the second thing to try. Open the Walmart app once again, double tap the
search Walmart button, search for something either by using Siri or typing
something into the search box, then double tap the search button on the bottom
right. Next, near the middle of the screen but on the far left side, find where
it says results for and then names the item for which you searched, then start
swiping to the right with one finger to go through the results. Expected
behavior is to be able to continuously swipe through and hear each result as
you swipe through, but you only hear the first result and just can’t swipe any
further after you get to the add to cart button for that result. There is a
work around for this, but it isn’t nearly as convenient. But what one can do is
to do a three finger swipe up to get to the next screen and then drag their
finger up and down the screen to find the two or three or so results on that
screen. But since the screens can kind of overlap with the swiping, one could
easily miss a search result using this method. Also, of course, one can swipe
down with three fingers to go backwards in the list and review previous screens
to see if they may have missed something.

Here’s a third thing to try, just to sort of show what works. While still in
the list of search results from the prior exercise, pick any one of them and
double tap the add to cart button and then close the Walmart app. Now, open the
Walmart app again, double tap on the your cart contains 1 item now showing in
the upper right of the screen. This time, the app doesn’t close and one gets
the expected screen with the item in the cart shown, the continue to checkout
button shown, and if one scrolls down a bit further, all the saved for later
items are shown as well. And note that, this time, one is able to swipe with
one finger through the list of saved for later items without a problem. Also
note that, though, should one navigate back up to the actual item shown in the
cart and double tap either the remove button or the save for later button, then
the app will once again close without letting you view your saved for later
items.

Again, these issues can be worked around as I’ve tried to show above, but these
are definite changes from how the app used to behave, at least in my case using
the 24.39.2 version of the app that dropped yesterday and using both my iPhone
15 Pro and my iPhone 13 Mini running iOS 18.0.1, although these issues did
occur in iOS 17 as well.

Subject: Re: Mark on the Walmart App in iOS 18, It Works for Me with Voice Over

I just had a Walmart order delivered to me a couple days ago and had no
difficulty placing that order on my iPhone 15 Pro. everything I received was
correct, so I’m not sure. Maybe I was just lucky.

Hello Everyone,

I’ve been reading all of the extremely negative messages regarding the latest
version of the Walmart app and I just want to say that I think the app has a
great deal to offer VoiceOver users.

I use the Walmart app several times, per week, at home and in-store, and it
continues to impress me with how easy it makes my shopping and purchasing
experience.

The reason I am posting this is because Walmart was one of the first
organizations to include screen reader users in its development process and I
think it is unfair to state that they do not care about us.

While I rarely have items delivered to my house, I regularly use the Walmart
app to browse items before entering the store and to look up item info while in
the store.

When in the store, I, more often than not, use the iOS Walmart app to self
check-out and to review my receipts for accuracy.

I am not saying that the app is VoiceOver bug free, but I am saying that in my
opinion, this avalanche of negativity is approaching something that is beyond
my experience, real or imagined.

I’ll say this: I find the Walmart app much easier to use than the Amazon app
when it comes to browsing for items. One is not inundated with nearly as much
screen clutter as Amazon insists on displaying at every opportunity.

I urge anyone, especially new VoiceOver users, to download the app, give it a
try, and form your own opinion as to its usability.

Finally, as I stated in a previous post, I cannot reproduce the issues
described on this list on my 14. Earlier today, I used a 15 and could not get
the issues to occur, either

I can honestly say that both the Walmart and Sam’s club apps are among my
favorite in iOS.

Again, this is just my opinion.

Mark
