Why would you squander an Air Tag on your phone? For one thing, you have to have your phone to locate an Air Tag. For another thing, if I can't find my phone, I do the following:
Siri, find my phone. Soon it starts giving a signal, and Siri will say something like phone nearby. I keep going toward the signal until I locate my phone. I have an Air Tag just loose in my purse. It works fine.
