Alan, the only thing that I can recommend they would achieve what you want. Would be turning off Wi-Fi and cellular data. That way it doesn't refresh. I'm surprised the-apple did not suggest that.

I would encourage you before making a setting suggestion to make sure yours is set the same and go into the native Mail app for a bit to ensure new messages aren’t arriving with the setting.
