Jenny, it would be amazing if we could “read things like visual people”, but keep in mind that we are still not quite there and while these Meta Smart Glasses certainly offer much with respect to doing things more or less hands free, it’s the AI behind them and apps like Be My Eyes and Seeing AI which will hopefully make this more and more a reality. Maybe Meta will implement more features as they realize the benefits for the visually impaired because I am not sure how far an integration with Seeing AI will go as it is a Microsoft product, but ultimately having something like the short text channel capability would be great. By the I mean an ongoing AI based interpretation of what the camera sees so you could walk along a street or inside a mall and you would get feedback as to what signage is seen. I live in a small town, but there are a few stores which are right in the middle of a block with buildings right up against each other and sometimes doors no more than 20 or 30 feet apart where it can be a bit difficult to know exactly where you are. I have used the short text channel in the Seeing AI app as I was walking along and pointing my phone towards the stores and I would get pretty good feedback about signs in the window which often were enough to tell me what store exactly I was passing. If this could be done hands free simply by glancing left or right it would be a lot easier than having to pull out your phone, unlocking it and then starting Seeing AI.
