Canada is definitely a mix of metric and imperial in that dimensional lumber is still sold using the imperial system, e.g. 2x4 by 8 or 2x6 x 10 referring to a standard 2 inch by 4 inch by 8 foot long stud or a 2 inch by 6 inch by 10 foot. Then of course the actual dimension is only 1.5 by 3.5 inches or 1.5 by 5.5 because in the naming they use the dimensions of the rough lumber, but in order to make sure it is straight it has to go through a planer and it then loses another half an inch in width and thickness. But when it comes to distances and temperatures, Canada is pretty well into the metric system although even many young people still say they are 5 feet 6 inches tall or whatever.

I was born in 1965 when the UK had a foot in both the metric and imperial systems. Many products were weighed and measured imperially. We became more metric after our joining the European Community. At school we had rulers and weights in both systems although when I was young you were always weighed and measured imperially. In some ways I feel more at home with the imperial system and can more easily relate to its concepts. Young people are more metric than my generation I believe.
