To add to Mario’s description, think of a text message conversation more like a live chat as you would have in WhatsApp or Messenger. Either you send somebody a message or somebody sends one to you, at this point that conversation is in your messages list and double tapping it will open it, you can see previous messages even if they go back weeks or months as long as you of course don’t delete the message. If you have people you message with regularly, I would not delete those messages and in fact if you swipe down on a message you can PIN it to the top of your list. I have six conversations/contacts Pinned and they show up as 2 rows of 3, then below is my messages list.
