And now you know why when you pressed the action button, it said Silent mode. Because, in fact, you had it on in there.
Below that setting there is a line explaining what it does when silent mode is on. iPhone will not play ringtones, alerts, and system sounds. iPhone will still play alarms, timers, music, and audio from videos. There is another setting in there that you may find helpful. It says, show in status bar.If you turn that on, you will know in the status line if Silent mode is on.
