How about expanding the thread, which then keeps the thread together, but you see each message separately?
In case you don't know how that is done, when VoiceOver says X subject and ends with 3 messages, or however many there are. Instead of opening the message, flick up or down until you hear, "expand thread" and double tap. Then, the message will list everyone in the thread and when you arrow down, you will have each message on its own. Then, you can open and read it as you wish. Close it, and arrow down to the next message, etc., until you are done with the thread. That is what I do if there is more than 2 messages in a thread as, like you, the old method doesn't work as well as it used to.
