The music app plays mp3 files just fine. However, trying to play them from an external drive is likely to be difficult, if possible at all.

I’m getting confused with what I can and can’t do with external storage and my iPad. I have several 4 TB SSD devices that, with a hub, I could hook up to my iPad. If I remember, Apple did things to prevent music from being copied from their device to others to prevent piracy. Now, however, I’m not so sure. I did figure out how to tap into my external drive with my iPad. It’s under Files. I tried to load a very large folder into my iPad, but it was going slower than I wanted, so I stopped it. I’m not finding the information I need, so I’m planning on going to the Apple Store on Sunday and see what can be done. Honestly, I think this iPad will do what I want, so even if I can’t play tunes from an external drive, I can still listen to things with it as well as take notes with it. Here's what’s confusing me about playing music on my iPad. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m sure the iPad can play .mp3 files. All of my music is in that form. I don’t think I have any Apple coded music. Now, if Apple wanted to be picky, I guess it could go through files and determine it’s music, but if it did that, a fair bit of stuff that’s composed by someone couldn’t be moved from one iPad to another. Who knows? Perhaps that’s what’s happening, but I have no idea. I’ll ask here for a good source to learn from, but if I don’t learn anything, the Apple Store is a couple of miles away, so there’s no problem. Thanks for any help I can get.
