When I am on a call and a text comes in my phone vibrates and makes a notification sound that I have received a text just as it would when I wasn't using the Phone app. The only difference is that the notification sound is considerably quieter. I then remove the phone from my ear so that it switches over to speaker at this point the call and progress screen is showing for me in and I use my. unlocking gesture, and the call in progress screen goes away is replaced by the screen that comes up when you first wake up your iPhone you're the one that shows the time and date and the unlock button. I then unlock the phone go to messages and access the message or if the message is showing on the lock screen. I double tap that and go into Messages and can read the message all this while the phone call is still in progress.
