Dan, can you be more specific? I wonder if you mistake the action button with something else because by default all it does is to toggle Mute and Ring just like the little switch did before. I don’t understand how you could “find myself in places on the phone I did not expect” unless of course you selected a different action other than silent mode. I also think it’s pretty out of the way above the volume buttons and it take a pretty deliberate press of the button to engage it. For those who wonder what all it can do, below are the actions you can select in Settings > Action button: Silent Mode (the default setting) Focus (brings up a list of your focus options) Camera (what it says, a physical button to bring up the camera app which of course the dedicated camera button does on those phones which have it) Visual Intelligence (bring up the camera screen where you can ask about what’s around you; Be My Eyes, Seeing AI etc. are better) Flashlight (toggles the Flashlight, but at least in iOS 26 Beta there is no “Flashlight On” or anything, just a very brief haptic feedback Voice Memo (starts recording a voice memo) Recognize Music (does what it says) Translate (brings up Apple Translate) Magnifier (no explanation needed) Control (it let’s you specify one particular control like “Talk to Siri” or “Scan Code” or “Call Aira”, just tap “Choose a control” to get the full list and select one). Shortcut (same as control, if you have shortcuts you can choose one to run when you press the button). Official description is “Open an app or run your favourite shortcut” Accessibility “Quickly choose an accessibility feature”, followed by a button where you can select one just like with triple click home No action (pretty self-explanatory, it means nothing happens if you press the button I have so far left it on silent mode, I hope one day Apple allows users to assign different actions to that button by doing a single press, double press, triple press and press and hold, this way it could be used for up to 4 different things. Once again, unless you selected Visual intelligence or something else and forgot about it, I don’t see how accidently pressing that button would take you anywhere.

Hi, I can not speak to the differences between the 16 and the 16E. However, I will say that the action button in my opinion is far too sensitive and I turned mine off. I kept finding myself in places on the phone I did not expect to be because of its sensitivity. I use other methods to do what I would like it to do. Other than that, I love my 16E, it is so much faster than my SE was. I’m curious about the “Action Button” on the 16e and what people think about it. I’m still in mourning over the loss of the home button, does the “Action Button” fill in any part of the loss of the home button?
