In earlier iOS versions you could just delete the message. Later on you had to double tap the edit button where you had the choice of pin messages select messages, etc. Letting you know that Apple did not go back to previous versions: you have to double tap on filter messages, which among other things shows deleted messages. Once in there at the bottom you double tap on delete, after which they are permanently Gone.
