Hi Moderator Mark, I can well appreciate the difficulties of being responsive to moderation issues on the list at all times. For what it’s worth, I moderate the Braillists Forum which is also on Google Groups, and here is how I make my life as easy as possible:
* Require all subscriptions to be approved by the moderator * Set it up so that all new members are automatically put on moderated status when they join the list * If their first message looks legitimate, remove the moderation flag when you approve their first post * Don’t deal with subscription requests or moderated messages unless you also have time to deal with the fallout Admittedly, this does mean that some members are waiting a few days before their subscription requests are approved/their messages are released from moderation. However, it also means that if I let through what I think is a harmless message and it turns out to be harmful, I’m at my desk all day and can squash it very quickly. I don’t have to be on high alert all the time, but I make sure I’m on high alert when I let a moderated message through. In addition, since Google alerts me every time there’s a new subscription request or a new message that requires approval, I don’t have to rely on my list members writing to me when a new member is causing grief, because either that new member would be on moderation and I have to approve the message anyway, or I approved the message and am on active alert for any fallout. You are absolutely correct. While I do my best to keep spam off the list, it does help when members send me an email alerting me to problems. Sometimes, I will approve a join request only to have the person start spamming us. So, when you notice something, please send me an off-list email and I will do my bet to resolve it in a timely manner. Richard, I don’t know why you seem to be so down on the list, these days, but I assure you that I am here, paying attention as much as possible and am not using an alias. There is a definite reason why I cannot post to the list using my UC account with Google, any longer. The short answer is that UC reserved the domain with Google as the provider for all of the backend services for the UC email. Consequently, my short term solution is to use the group name when I post. There is another solution but the truth is that my time is so limited that I have yet to address the alternative. Also, when I post articles to the list, I manually format them so that they can be more easily read by screen readers. Have none of you noticed that rarely do you encounter strange strings of text in the articles? This takes a great deal of time but I do it because I think the info is important. For example, it took about an hour to format those articles I posted this morning. Just some food for thought. I hope this answers questions and reassures everyone that I am here. This is a marvelous community and has existed for a long time so lets not be so quick to bad-mouth the list because of a few hick-ups, okay?
