It sounds like there is an issue with the Braille Commands in iOS. Space+s is the normal default, but that could have been changed or duplicated somewhere, who knows.
Open the VoiceOver settings, commands, and go down to where it lists your Orbit Reader, then Navigation commands. It is in that gruping. If I do a S chord it does not go to the status bar. I also have one of the NLS Humanware e-reader displays and it is exhibiting the same behavior with the S chord. The only way I have found to get to the status bar is to do a L chord to move to the top.
