Some of the AI apps claim they can do this to a degree, but there are a few
issues with this.
For one, nothing out there would replace a white cane or guide dog which means
you would have to walk with either a white cane or guide dog in one hand and
holding your iPhone in the other hand and you would have to wear a headset of
some sort to hear what whichever app you use may or may not say about upcoming
obstacles.
This is of course the dream for what AI smart glasses should be able to do
since it si the perfect task for glasses which you can wear and which would
leave your hands free.
The problem is that in order for this to really work well, the glasses (or your
iPhone) would need to have at least a LiDAR sensor which can accurately measure
the distance between you and whatever obstacle it focuses on. Any of the Pro
iPhones for quite a few years now do have a LiDAR sensor so this would be OK.
However, for it to really work well, there would also have to be a Radar sensor
and I don’t think this exists on any smart phone yet at all.
Finally, it will be years yet before such sensors are small enough to be
embedded in the frame of a pair of smart glasses and where battery technology
exists which could provide enough capacity to get even an hour or two of use
from such glasses if they had such sensors.
The closest you would be able to come to this right now would be to use a pair
of Meta smart glasses and call a Be My Eyes volunteer or which is possible with
the glasses or to use WhatsApp and call a friend or family member who could
then give you actual real-time information.
Of course the soon to be released EchoVision smart glasses which are made for
the blind would also work although you can only call Be My Eyes or Aira with
them at this point and there will soon be more main stream models as according
to the rumours Google will release smart glasses this year and possible Apple
will as well.

Best regards,
Sieghard

Subject: Question about an application

Hello,

Does exist any application that detects obstacles when we are walking?
