In the United States there is also no “u” in words like “colour”, “humour”, “neighbour” etc. As Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady said when it comes to the English language “In America they haven’t spoken it for years”. However, even here in Canada we only add an “e” if it’s more than one, e.g. I bought 1 potato and my friend bought 2 potatoes.
