I think allowing you to access your contacts is absolutely the preferred way to do this and I believe Fleksy has not done this so far because of some sort of restriction Apple had. The Fleksy people told me at one point they were hoping to do this in iOS 6 and I think it would be much better to do away with the ability to manually add an email address or phone number under settings. After all, the native mail and messages apps simply use the contacts you have on your phone anyways and so does Skype and some other apps.
