The advantage of sharing a library is cost. For example, we have a joint family library that my wife, some of my kids and I all access on our respective devices, and it's on our Apple TV. We don't have to purchase the same music or apps more than once, and with iTunes Match, we have over 20000 songs in the cloud. We have separate Apple IDs for more personal functions such as iCloud, FaceTime and iMessage. Works very well for us.
