The only thing you can do is install Awareness. It will pick up anything it
hears from the mike and you can hear those noises through your in-ear
phones. But, it won't give you any directional indication, so I wouldn't
use phones when traveling in a busy area.

As with the other in ear type phones I've tried, when you get a good seal,
the sounds from the outside are greatly attenuated. You'd sure never use
them when walking anywhere on the street, because of this. They come with a
few different size tips, although taking the tips on and off isn't the
easiest thing in the world.
