Many laptops have the function keys default to media and system keys,
since traditional function keys are so seldom used any more. Usually
there's a function key on the keyboard (often labelled FN) which you can
hold down when hitting a function key to get the traditional function
key behaviour. You may also be able to toggle the behaviour of the
function keys and even change the default behaviour in the BIOS
settings. Googling this or looking it up in your laptops manuals should
show you how to do this for your particular laptop.
