Whether you hold it in portrait mode with the home button on the bottom or in landscape mode with the home button to either side is your choice and something you have to try out. I bought my Mom an iPad 2 a year and a half ago and used it for a couple of weeks during the setup and to familiarize myself with it so I could be of more help to her and I found that sometimes landscape felt better especially if you are typing as you can pretty much type like on a regular keyboard with all your fingers with some practice.
