This is why I strongly advocate people to learn all the gestures, and why I just as strongly advocate learning to touch the display to find one's way around it.
After double or split tapping delete at the bottom of the message, you can: use a two finger flick up to have VO start reading the beginning of the body of the next message; do a four finger tap in the top half of the display to move focus to the upper left corner; or touch the display where the date usually appears and then use a two finger flick down to continuously read from that point.
