Rob told you how to find out what iPod Touch you have although I think this
may only tell you the iOS version, not sure if it tells you the actually
Generation, e.g. second or third etc. The iOS version it runs though will
give you some indication.

As for the battery this is not so easy since iDevices all have built-in
batteries which are not user replaceable. There are kits you can buy which
include the appropriate battery and tools you need to open up an iDevice
(Apple designed a special screw and you need the special screw driver to
remove it), but it is definitely something you only want to attempt if you
are very technically inclined and I'm not sure if it would be feasible for a
completely blind person. You could probably find repair places not
affiliated with Apple that would do this, but depending on what they charge
it may not be worth it.
