There are many, but how well the OCR (optical character recognition) works depends on a number of factors. Mainly these are which iPhone you have, how good is the lighting in the room/around you, how steady do you hold the camera and how well are you able to focus the text in the camera window. The iPhone 3GS only has a 3 MP camera and it definitely works less well for OCR than an iPhone 4 which has a 5 MP camera or an iPhone 4S or 5 which has an 8 MP camera. You have to make sure you have good lighting without reflections or glare. You have to have a steady hand because if the iPhone moves or shakes as you take the picture you will not get good results. The text or page also has to be visible in the camera's window/view finder. As a fully blind person this is not always difficult and can be best achieved by putting the corner of the phone where the camera lens is roughly in the centre of the page, then lift the phone straight up about 8 to 12 inches and maybe a bit more if it's a larger page. It might be best if a sighted person can help at first until you get a sense how high you have to go so the entire page is in the picture. As for apps, there is Prizmo, SayText, Text Grabber, Text Detective and probably some others. If you look for "OCR" in the archives (you find a link for the list archives at the bottom of each message) you will find a lot of information.
