Hold the iPod between the palms of your hands just where your fingers join your hands. You want the home button to the right. Make sure that the screen is facing away from your body.
The first, second and third fingers of your left hand are on the left; of the iPod, the first, second and third fingers of your right hand are on the right just past the home button. Your fingers are opposite each other. They recommend you have a case because the iPod itself is very slippery. Hope this helps.
