You need an app called Pages to read word attachments.

Subject: Reading Word attachments on the iPhone

Hi Listers,

I have an attachment which was, apparently, typed on Word 2010. I double
tapped the attachment and it will not open. I can read the name of the
attachment and it has a .docx suffix. I feel sure I cannot be the first to
come across this matter and look forward to any advice.

Tony Elbourn.
