Neil, thanks for setting me straight on the D3O. I hate it when the letter O gets tossed into product and serial numbers that also might include the number 0. My Impact Shell does have covers over the power and volume buttons but not over the mute switch. That's interesting that yours does not.

I got this unit from Amazon but it was $5 more than what the Apple Store was selling it for. At least I didn't have to pay Amazon sales tax. I will add that the Apple store rep helping me with my screen film said the Tech 21 was the best case they carried. The D30 protection is an orange strip around the edge of the case that is flexible in its natural state but hardens when presented with an impact. This orange strip doesn't show if the case is a color other than clear. Openings exist in the case for the ring/mute switch, the lightning connector, and the rear camera and flash. The on/off switch has a tactile cover but the switch still easily operates when pressing down on this cover. The side volume up and down buttons also have tactile covers that seemed a bit more stiff but I was still able to use them with no problem and I expect they will get easier over time. The cover I got is clear and I thought at first that the orange D30 showing through looked a bit garish but on second thought I've decided it's pretty cool and telegraphs its protection layer to the sighted world.
