A push notification means that a notification is being automatically pushed to your phone. You're not requesting it or manually asking for an update. For example, email messages may get pushed to your phone as soon as they show up on the server, and they may not wait until you check your email or set up your phone to check for email every few minutes. This is good if you need to know something as soon as it happens, but it could add to your battery drain or be annoying if it really isn't that urgent.
