Hi Eric,

Mine have that feature of letting in the outside noise when music is paused.
You can disable this feature though. The directions are in the manual. I
got lost because of not being able to tell where sound was actually coming
from.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

Lois

Subject: RE: Most Excellent Bluetooth Ear Buds Anyone?

I ordered these after the few recommendations. Please allow me to express my
opinion such that I do not challenge others'. Many of the things we look for
in devices are subjective and can make or break an experience for one and
never be noticed by another.

I primarily contrast the Motorola S-11 with the Plantronics Backbeat
903/RUS. They both have the business that hangs around the ear and an arm
with the speakers and bud that go into the ear. I found the Motorola wanted
to go deeper into the ear canal and came with a tip with phalange to block
out sound and seal in base. This was especially noticeable when I removed
their tip and replaced it with another that did not try to seal the ear
canal. I lost considerable sound quality and volume.

The other major design difference is that Motorola uses a fixed length band
across the back of the head to hold the two ear pieces together and in
place. The Plantronics hang nearly independently on each ear with a cable
connecting them more for transmitting information and keeping the right and
left pieces secure in storage. I would say my head size is very average, but
the flexible band of the Motorola held the ear pieces too tight against my
head and ears for comfort. I could not find a way of extending the band, but
perhaps I missed it.

With regard to music quality, I give the nod to the Plantronics. Even
without the base boost, music of all types sounds clear and reproduced as
intended. The boost seems a bit much for the situations when I listen to
music, i.e., walking about or during short breaks in waiting rooms, etc.
Even for a long session of just listening to music, I think the boost is too
deep and so seldom use it.

I did not test the microphone. Here I have never found a truly good signal
as in telephone calls, but especially when using Siri or dictating. As that
is most important to me (dictating and Siri), I feel stuck between resigning
myself to cords getting in the way or limiting voice with bluetooth.

One last nod to Plantronics is in bluetooth lag. I have had many, many BT
devices and I realize this is a bother with almost all of them, but some
much worse than others. Price is certainly no guide, either. I would guess
the delay is twice as long for the Motorola as the Plantronics when entering
a key press when editing, for instance. Most distressing if you have to key
a lot, which you do, since you cannot rely on dictation or Siri.

I highly recommend you try the Plantronics 903/RUS. Amazon has them for
around $50. The RUS designation is the newer model. It does come with some
silly feature that allows you to "hear what is going on around you". It uses
a microphone to play sound through the earpieces, but the problem is you
have no idea which side of you, front or back, above or below, or how close
or far away the sound is. I cannot think of a good use for it.

Thanks for enduring the rambling. I hope I got something of some use to
someone.

Eric

They are most excellent, every bit as good as the S9 HD.

They are more in the $100 price range but well worth it.

hour listening time with a 5 minute charge, 2 for 10 and 3 for 15.
