Hallo to those who have expressed an interest in the StandScan box.

As i said initially, the actual box is very similar to the ScanBox that I
have been playing with. The difference between the two lays with the lights.
Both can use a 9 volt battery, however, the StandScan can also be plugged into
the mains or use an extra strong 12 volt battery. I have found that to get
reliably good results, it is necessary to use 12 volts. Optically speaking, the
12 volts gives a really good and even light and i find it works regardless of
ambient lighting. I have used the StandScan in bright sunlight, twilight and
complete darkness and have achieved a uniform set of good results. It seems
that the StandScan, with its potential for more powerful lights, is actually
the answer to our OCR issues!

I ordered mine from New York, but the box actually came from Hong Kong. I
bought the StandScan Pro, which includes the lights. I think I had to add, as a
separate item, the mains cable. This cable has a transformer built into the
plug and is round pinned. Although this probably only affects us in the UK and
Ireland, I should say that my adapter to square pins doesn't really work with
it, the round pins being too loose, so to use it I had to hold it in place.
However, the good news is that I can use the transformer cable of my old and,
now, disused, Pacmate Omni, as it reduces the charge to the desired 12 volts. I
am sure that I saw, on the website of StandScan, the option to buy an extra
battery holder and connector for a 12 volt battery, but it appears that I
omited to order it. I shall take another look because, so long as the 12 volt
battery gives the good light available from the mains, I will be happy to have
it as my portable alternative. In short, Ha!, If you are in the UK, don't
bother with the mains adapter if you already have a transformer cable which
will give you 12 volts and which has the sort of connecter that fits with a
PacMate. But, do consider the 12 volt battery case as this power is absolutely
necessary to get the best out of this scanning solution.

As to cost, you might do better to check with the StandScan website for
precise info, but the basic cost was about 30 Euros, please don't quote me on
that, plus I paid for the mains adapter, which I am sure would work in most
countries, including the States, which was about 4.50 Euros and, finally,
shipping was approx 10 Euros. I got a sort of reduction for advertising it on
FaceBook. In the end I paid about 44 Euros. I am sorry, I am 'orribly
mathematically challenged when it comes to cost etc, so do please check with
the manufacturers.

Finally, I do feel, after some trial and error, that I can recommend the
StandScan when using 12 volts, for our OCR needs. It can be used out of the
box, but would be even easier to use with some additional markers for the
corners of the phone. The lights included with the ScanBox are simply not good
enough in my opinion, so go for the StandScan.

As always, below is a perfect scan, at least it seemed so when I read
through it just before. It is a double page scan from a book of cryptic
crosswords, is on cheap paper, with bad print, in columns, plus it has number
both in a column down the side and in odd places at the end of each clue, in
other words, a true challenge to a pocket sized OCR package, such as Prizmo. I
am thinking that if this set up can cope with this, it should do well with
contents pages etc.

    All the best, Sandy.
