I am truly not very good with this app yet, but when you first touch play, a word shows up on the left upper screen. There is a text box below and toward the middle of the screen with the first letter of the association. You then put in the word you think it is starting with the next letter from the one that is already there. Move your finger to the right from the text box and you will see ok. Double tap. If right, you will then see that word at the top as the next word and the text box will have a new letter to work from. If wrong, you will feel a vibration and you can check the text box for the first two letters. You can be wrong three times before the puzzle just goes on and another word is given. Still playing with it so not sure about the whole game, but I found I just love word ladder so taking someone else's suggestion.
